What the Hell?

It had been a long and frustrating session; the painting I had been working on ended up in the trash.  But I still had a full palette so I fished out another ruined painting and slapped this on top of it.  Then I cleaned up, went to mass and watched “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”  Not a bad day.

The next morning I went into the studio and was shocked.  The work was horribly disturbing and I went downstairs and told my husband that my latest effort was going under the bed for ten years, like Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

Still, the fact that I had called up such an image left me uneasy.  I thought about it all day and realized that it was the result of a conversation with my brother and 43 years of reading the newspaper.   Life is often terrible, and with the exception of natural disasters, we do it to ourselves.

This is not a new thought.  It’s not even a new image; Giotto and Michelangelo painted Hell.  So what the Hell?  Here it is.
